What it takes to be a STATE CHAMPION
Allow me to inspire you for a moment. If you're going to be a state champion in any sport or academic, you will have to devote yourself entirely to the task at hand. You also have to convince your teammates. It will take sacrifice and determination--you cannot rely on luck or natural talent because as soon as you do, you take the risk of losing it all due to your own pride. Let's say that you ASSUME you're going to win but the other guy works harder and beats you in the finals. Well it will be said that HE WORKED HARDER. Do you want that to happen? To win the state championship will require motivation and determination. But it will also take God's intervention, because if your opponent has God on his side, then your opponent will win. How do you get GOD on your side? By giving Him the glory and credit He deserves. And, by praying for the people you're going to compete against. Sometimes, its not who wins that is important, but what lessons are learned along the way. Remember, for every winner there are at least a hundred losers. Is the winner the only one out of everyone who deserves a pat on the back? Treat everyone with respect, even the person who loses badly!
You should also consult your coach and ask him/her what it will take to win. Many times there is a certain level of ability that you have to attain that you have not attained yet. For example if the mile run was won last year in a certain time and you have been running 15 seconds behind that time, then you have to run FASTER! If you are on a team and you cannot compete on the level that other teams have won the state's have competed on, then its time to train like your competitors! If they are doing 100 push ups and sit ups and sprints before practice every day, then you must do the same! Are you a CHAMPION? Are you HUNGRY?
Your diet, your sleep, you daily routine will circle around the championship. In the meantime, try to get good grades! Your acquaintances, your friends, your family will encourage you and you will let no one tempt you to use drugs or alcohol. Anyone who does is your enemy.
You will obey your coach and deem them to be a mentor. You will study your sport in books, through people, and by watching youtube. If your coach does not excel in certain areas, then you will find other people who who can provide that incentive. Let's say your coach is good at conditioning but not so good in technique. Then find someone who is! Watch youtube videos about training and technique in your sport and do it in your spare time!
You will be disciplined and motivated. The state championship is your goal and everything else will be put on the back-burner. It is a one-time opportunity and it may never come again. You could get sick next year, you could get injured or sidelined, you could have an emergency which may prevent you from competing.
Now is your moment, seize the day!
Hi I am Meredith and this is my "dramatic story" of how we won the State Championship in volleyball. Being 6'3" tall, I was the star spiker for the team and our school never even went to states before. But we had a new coach who played ladies NCAA volleyball and made it to the finals in 2012. And so we were really optimistic about this year, and the coach was very positive and often lent a "shoulder to cry on" during the school year, and after you read about the flirtatious women and drugs on the team, boy did we ever need it! First there was Vicki, she was the DRAMA QUEEN of the whole bunch of us. I mean, first day of practice, and she was wearing a red mini dress, chewing bubble gum, smelling of beer, and bring guys into the gym who even flirted with coach Myers! I mean, she almost got kicked off the team right then, but when coach saw the way she set up the ball for me to spike it, she wasn't going anywhere! Besides coach said she needed to be "flirted with" once in awhile LOL
Then there was Carla Crackhead, I mean Carla McCorkle, who was a short girl but very fast. Second week of practice I noticed a strange smell in the locker room and I asked her what it was. She said to be quiet, she was just getting high. Then she dropped some crumbs or something out of her hand onto the tile floor. Carla, I said, is that crack? She nodded and said it helped her to play. I told her I didn't believe her and she said her boyfriend was a dealer and if I told anyone it would mean trouble for me. Well, that really didn't scare me and so I said, "Listen here, I am not afraid of you OR your boyfriend. At the same time, I am not going to tell anyone including coach." Then Brenda walked in and she smelled it too. Is that crack? Brenda asked. It is crack because I used to smoke it! Then Jesus saved me and I was set free! Then Coach Myers came around the corner. "I heard that! WHO is smoking crack in here? Carla, I want to have a word with you!" Needless to say, I didn't see Carla for about a week. But then, surprise, surprise, Carla came whimpering back onto the team. "Jesus saved me, too!"
Now let me tell you all about Wendy. NO one would ever believe a sweet girl named "Wendy" would ever steal anything, right? But we were missing things left and right all season long! Vicki's lipstick, Carla's $20, my Walkman, even coach's credit card? I mean, this girl was ripping everyone off and we were tired of it. One day coach said, "Alright, everyone, strip search! And when we find the girl who has taken my mascara, we are going to tar and feather her!" Well, Wendy stripped first, down to her underwear, the rest of us followed. NO mascara! Then coach Myers walked over to Wendy and said, "I think I know where it is. Let's just look in this trash can here!" And there it was in the trash next to Wendy! Guilty, guilty, guilty! Wendy looked at coach with those big brown eyes that could bring you to tears, "Please coach, I only wanted to be as beautiful as you!" "NO," coach said. You are FIRED off this team! And don't come back!" Then she said, "Well so far our team is comprised of whores and crack-heads and thieves, at least we got rid of the thief!" I just about laughed my behind off. AND I drank a good beer that night! This was the the last game of the season and we were all set to go into the state play-offs.
The next day we boarded a bus for state capital and the championships. As soon as we arrived the other teams were making fun of us. I don't know how they found out about our drama, but they did. One girl from another team came up to us and asked, "Hey can I buy some crack?" Then her teammates laughed. I was sooo embarrassed. But later I said, "Just for that, we are going to beat them!" Come to find out, they made it to the finals, and so did we. After they slit the tires on our bus, and after they tried to poison Coach Myers. The final serve of the night, we were even and it was do or die. I looked at the girl who made the comment and said, "Here is your CRACK!" And I served the fastest serve in my life right to her! It bounced off her forearms into the bleachers and WE WON! I will always remember our victory and team. Our team of misfits that God made into CHAMPIONS!

I am Wendy Alouette and I was a won a State Championship match against the boys in West Virginia in Middle School. From there we went to the Nationals and a boy from my state also went because the second and third place finishers from each state were allowed to compete in Nationals. Well guess what, I wrestled against the same guy, Brad, from my state for the national title, as I did for the state title. I just beat him again! So I won Nationals also in the 103 pound weight class and everyone was congratulating me, except the guys that I beat LOL.
Anyway when I went out for the varsity wrestling team in high school, Brad's dad was the coach and he did not like me very much. I think he was jealous because I beat his son for the state and national title. We were standing in front of the whole team and he said, "You can be on the Varsity team if you can take me down!" And so we wrestled and he was 200 pounds with a gut, I was a scrawny 120. He came at me running and I just threw my arm around his head and took him down with a classic head-lock. Onto his back he went and he could not fight his way out of it. I was not going to let go and he was pinned in 10 seconds. Everyone laughed. Coach was pinned by a girl! He was so embarrassed that he didn't even let me join the team like he said he would! End of story.

A Tennis Story
At age nine Andre Agassi had a lot of natural talent in tennis. His father could barely afford to send him to tennis school, so he decided to wager on his son's playing ability and what did he wager? His HOUSE. The other guy, football legend Jim Brown, was willing to put up $10,000 however the tennis club owner told him not to, that he would lose the wager and be embarrassed. Jim decided to play two sets and then wager, and lost both sets. Good thing he did, he would have lost $10,000! Agassi went on to become #1 in the world.
